High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini met today with the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, in Brussels. This was Prime Minister Abiy's first visit to the EU institutions, where he was received also by President Jean-Claude Juncker and by President Donald Tusk.

During this first bilateral meeting, both leaders discussed the ongoing political and economic reforms in Ethiopia. As stressed in the November 2018 Foreign Affairs Council Conclusions on Ethiopia, Federica Mogherini expressed the EU's wholehearted support to his progressive agenda. Prime Minister Abiy went through the work of his administration towards national reconciliation and peacebuilding in view of the upcoming 2020 general elections, as well towards regional economic and social integration.

The High Representative and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed the implementation of the EU-Ethiopia Strategic Engagement signed in June 2016, in particular dialogue and cooperation on social and economic development, investment and trade; governance and human rights; as well as regional peace and security, and agreed on the importance of expanding this close partnership, notably during the Federica Mogherini’s upcoming visit to the Horn of Africa in February 2019. They also exchanged views on the recent regional dynamics, including the tripartite agreement between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, prospects for regional integration and economic cooperation in the Horn, AMISOM and the Red Sea.
