Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission met today with Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of India. The meeting focused on the development of EU-India relations and the ongoing implementation of the substantial agenda for cooperation, approved by the leaders during last EU-India Summit (New Delhi, 6 October 2017).

Good progress has been made in bringing the EU-India Strategic Partnership to its full potential, notably in the fields of energy and climate change, environment, ICT, transport, research and innovation, as well as space with the signature of the Agreement on Earth Observation Data Exchange in March 2018. The High Representative informed the Minister on the preparation of a new Joint Communication on India, which will provide direction for increased cooperation in the coming years, as well as the EU's upcoming strategy to enhance, in a sustainable manner, EU-Asia connectivity. They exchanged views on creating the conditions to increase trade and investment flows. The High Representative also expressed the EU's readiness to deepen the dialogue on data protection and referred to the new EU data protection regime.

Federica Mogherini and Minister Swaraj discussed in depth foreign policy and security cooperation, namely on counterterrorism, cybercrime, maritime security, as well as in the Indian Ocean. They also addressed developments in their respective neighborhoods, such as the situation of the Rohingya, Afghanistan, the Maldives, the importance of preserving the JCPOA with Iran, as well as the ongoing diplomatic work for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. 

Prior to the meeting, High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini and Minister Swaraj opened the work of the conference on "Climate, Peace and Security: the Time for Action". They also opened, on the premises of the European External Action Service, the photography exhibition "New Homelands: The Indian Diaspora in the European Union" – an initiative of the Delegation of the European Union to India showcasing the contribution of Indian diaspora to the EU.
