Biodiversity loss – the biggest threat facing humanity today

27.05.2021

Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse are the biggest challenges facing humanity today.

EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Esmeralda Hernandez Aragones, said this on 27 May 2021 at an event marking the Eswatini Biodiversity Day held at Mantenga Nature Reserve at Ezulwini.

The event also attended by the Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Moses Vilakati, the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, Harris Madze Bulunga, as well as members of the diplomatic community, was held to raise awareness on the importance of promoting biodiversity in order to preserve Mother Earth for future generations.

In her speech, Ambassador Hernandez Aragones said loss of biodiversity and the ecosystem collapse was taking a big toll on planet earth. She said this was mainly because of unsustainable human activities such as over-exploitation of natural resources, deforestation as well as unsustainable consumption of wildlife.

The Ambassador said by engaging in such destructive activities, humanity was increasing the risk of climate change and the spread of infectious diseases.

“When we cut down forests and destroy ecosystems, we not only destroy the very foundations of our lives but also the natural barriers that should protect us from pathogens. As such, this loss of biodiversity is a massive blow to our lives. We need to change and that change should happen now,” said the Ambassador.

She challenged every member of society to play a part in reversing these unsustainable human activities in order to preserve the earth for the future generations. According to the Ambassador this can be done through the use of cleaner energy sources, reduced deforestation and better land management through sustainable agriculture.

The Ambassador said the youth, who are the future leaders, can also play a huge role in turning things around for the sake of our planet.

“The youth are drivers of change. I implore you young people to talk to your friends, family and colleagues about biodiversity loss. Watch your consumption of resources and reduce your environmental footprint. Participate in voluntary activities such as clean up campaigns and awareness raising. In biodiversity, as in all other areas, the future is in your hands,” said the Ambassador.
