Phil Hogan, European Commissioner in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, made a timely visit to New Zealand in mid-February. Coming in the middle of the EU-NZ FTA negotiations, agricultural trade was a focus and so too was sustainability and the future of farming.

From 14 to 15 February 2019, Phil Hogan, European Commissioner in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, visited New Zealand. It was a timely visit, happening just before the third round of EU-NZ FTA negotiations. Being strong agricultural heartlands, the EU and New Zealand have much to compare about the future of farming.

While in Wellington, Commissioner Hogan met with his ministerial counterpart, Hon Damien O'Connor, as well as the Minister for Trade & Export Growth, David Parker and the Primary Production Select Committee, a group of New Zealand Members of Parliament. Phil Hogan also participated in a roundtable with New Zealand agriculture industry leaders.

On 15 February, Phil Hogan travelled through the regions of Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay. There, he met with dairy, wine, olive and apple industries.
