Cairo, Egypt

The Delegation of the European Union to Egypt and the Government of Egypt jointly hosted a conference titled "Sustainable Energy Horizons in Egypt 2040: Partnering for Shared Prosperity." The event aimed to review the key pillars of Egypt's Energy Strategy 2040 and sign new agreements to accelerate Egypt's transition toward clean and sustainable energy. Senior officials, European partners, international financial institutions, and industry experts gathered to discuss Egypt's energy vision, green hydrogen, power grid modernisation, gas sector transformation, and investment strategies within the framework of the EU Pact for the Mediterranean and the Trans-Mediterranean Cooperation on Energy and Clean Technology (T-MED) initiative.

The conference's highlights included the announcement of advanced contract negotiations for two major projects: the "Modernization of Egypt’s Electricity Transmission Network" and the "Egypt Green Hydrogen" project. The announcement took place in the presence of several Egyptian ministers and representatives from the EU Delegation to Egypt and the European Investment Bank (EIB), reflecting the depth of the strategic partnership in the energy sector between Europe and Egypt. During the conference, the EU announced an investment grant of up to €90 million for the electricity grid modernization and expansion programme.

This funding will support increasing the grid’s capacity to integrate renewable energy, helping Egypt achieve its target of 22 GW of renewable energy production by 2030. Additionally, the EU and the EIB are supporting the “Egypt Green Hydrogen Project” in Ain Sokhna with a European contribution of €34.3 million, reinforcing Egypt's leadership in green hydrogen and regional energy integration.

"With Egypt, one of our closest partners, we work on building a strategic architecture, fully recognising our common interests, which are intertwined and nearly inseparable. Egypt is not merely participating in the Mediterranean transformation. Egypt is anchoring it,” Angelina Eichhorst, the European Union Ambassador to Egypt, stated.

“The European Investment Bank is proud to support Egypt’s ambitious transition toward a more sustainable, secure and future-oriented energy system. By strengthening electricity transmission infrastructure and supporting innovative projects such as green ammonia production, we are helping enable the integration of renewable energy at scale and reinforcing Egypt’s role as a regional clean energy hub. These projects reflect the strength of the partnership between Egypt and the European Union under the Global Gateway strategy and its Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean Tech (T-MED) Initiative demonstrate the EIB’s continued commitment to mobilising long-term financing and expertise to accelerate the green transition, foster sustainable growth, and deliver tangible benefits for people and businesses across Egypt,” said Guido Clary, Head of the EIB Regional Hub for North Africa and the Near East.

The conference concluded with a call to strengthen regional cooperation, facilitate technology transfer, and increase investments to realize Egypt’s Energy Vision 2040 and strengthen the vital strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union for a sustainable and prosperous future.
