Description

The ancient craft of cheese making was reborn in Slaŭharad District due to local initiatives. Now, people from all over Belarus go there for culinary festivals. Tourism is the next important area of development of the region.

Goals and Objectives: Make the region attractive for tourists through cooperation between the governmental and non-commercial organizations, and the unique nature of the Slaŭharad lands.

Intermediate Outcomes: Seven key areas of tourism development were identified: historical, activity-based, gastronomic, ecological, ethnographical, rural and initiative-based. The district residents have joined informal initiative groups according to these areas: they open new routes, arrange excursions and master classes and collect ancient legends and rites.

The Regional Agro/Eco Tourism Board was formed; it comprises the initiative group leaders, representatives of farms, tourist organizations, and local authorities. The Board members determine the Project strategy and coordinate its key activities. The Board selected 16 out of 27 applications submitted for the first contest of local initiatives to be funded by the Project

Thus, the "Bee Kingdom" Eco-Museum will appear soon in the village of Ržaŭka. A flower museum will open in Slaŭharad. Water routes were developed for tourist groups, offering rafting along the Sož and Pronia Rivers. The Blue Spring (“Golubaya Krinitsa”) natural monument of national significance was included in the archeological and bike routes. More than 50 initiatives will be supported by the Project in total.

The Board members, Project staff and rural activists developed a long-term strategy and program of tourism development in Slaŭharad District.
