EU supports accreditation of Continuous Professional Development in Health Care

Within the framework of activities of the Higher Education Reform Experts (HEREs), the National Erasmus+ Office – Egypt (NEO-EGYPT), and the Support and Promotion for Higher Education Reform Experts (SPHERE), a technical assistance mission took place on September 18 and 19 titled: 'Accreditation of Continuous Professional Development in Health Care'.

Ambassador Ivan Surkoš, Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Egypt said "The European Union and Egypt proudly look back on a series of joint achievements in the field of higher education and scientific research. Between 2008 and 2014, around 1000 students have benefited from mobility scholarships. Also, during the same period, Egyptian institutions have participated in 49 Tempus projects, involving 29 Egyptian universities." "These projects have played a key role in promoting the internationalisation and modernisation of Egyptian higher education institutions," he explained.

Ambassador Surkoš added that since the launch of Erasmus+ in 2014, 18 new projects involving Egyptian institutions have started, and 8 additional projects will be signed this year, all with a total budget of EUR 31 million funded by the European Union.

The workshop was hosted by Helwan University at the Centre of International Excellence affiliated to the Faculty of Foreign Trade. The workshop aimed to discuss the importance of renewing the license to practice the profession for health care professionals, and to get them acquainted with the European Systems in Continuing Medical Education (Continuing Professional Development), its tools of application, its teaching and learning methods used by accredited professional development providers, the ways of accreditation for the already accredited international activities; and discusses the ethics of accredited career development providers.

The workshop was animated by Prof. Andrew Long, Expert in medical education and Vice President (Education) at the Royal College – UK, in addition to Egyptian experts in higher education, and continuing professional training in the medical sector in Egypt.

The workshop was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education, The Supreme Council of Universities, The Ministry of Health, The National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education, the Egyptian Council for Medical Specialties, several Deans of faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy, Applied Medical Sciences in the Egyptian public and private universities, armed forces, medical military academy, as well as representatives of professional syndicates, sciences associations. The Head of the EU Delegation to Egypt Ambassador Ivan Surkoš gave the opening speech of the workshop in company of Prof. Magued Negm President of Helwan University, Prof. Mohamed Elshennawy Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education, and Prof. Yasser Elshayeb, National ERASMUS+ Coordinator in Egypt. The Workshop was organized by the Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) from Egypt chaired by Dr. Hany Madkour – HEREs chairman, and Prof. Mohamed Reda Bassyouni, the Workshop coordinator.
