Mr. Charles Michel, President of the European Council of the European Union (EU), will travel to Mexico City on Saturday 18 September 2021 to participate to the VI Summit of Heads of States and Governments of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
The European Council gathers the Heads of States and Governments of the 27 EU Member States, as well as the President of the European Commission Ms. Ursula von der Leyen. It defines the political and strategic directions of the EU. It is chaired by Mr. Charles Michel, former Prime Minister of Belgium, who was elected by the members of the European Council for a mandate of two and half years starting in December 2019 and renewable once.
The EU has been a close partner of the CELAC since the foundation of the latter in 2011. The EU will be the only extraregional partner to be physically represented at the Summit through Mr Michel’s participation. This reflects the interest and engagement of the EU in favour of a closer relationship and cooperation between both regions to respond in a coordinated way to the many common challenges they face.
During the Summit, Mr. Michel will also have bilateral meetings with some of the Heads of States present, including Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico and host of the Summit.
