A virtual panel discussion about the future of high-performance computing (HPC) and its current trends will conclude the EU-ASEAN HPC Virtual School on 9 July 2021. Prestigious scientists, responsible for the design of some of the top supercomputers in the world, and pioneers of new HPC technology, such as quantum technology, will debate the current trends to overcome the Moore Law limit and explore the future of HPC and its applications.
Date: Friday, 9 July 2021

The “EU-ASEAN High-Performance Computing (HPC) Virtual School 2021: System Design and HPC Applications” started 5 July and will take place until 9 July.
Hosted by the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), the Supercomputer Center (ThaiSC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), the Kingdom of Thailand, the virtual school is organised by the ASEAN HPC Task Force and carried out in the framework of the Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI).
Co-chair of the ASEAN HPC Task Force Piyawut Srichaikul, COSTI Chair and Permanent Secretary of MHESI Prof. Sirirurg Songsivilai and EU Ambassador to Thailand Pirkka Tapiola officially opened the virtual school.
Following the opening, Satoshi Matsuoka, Director of RIKEN Center for Computational Science Japan, also delivered a keynote lecture on an overview of the Fugaku: future perspective.
The students, all from ASEAN Member States, participated in a session on research career development in Europe for ASEAN researchers. In this session, EURAXESS discussed the researcher’s gateway in Europe, while Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions and European Research Council shared pathways for interested parties on how to access research grants.
The students will spend the rest of the week learning basic HPC design and programming skills to access local and international HPC platforms with proficiency.
The school will wrap up with an event that is open to the public: a Panel Discussion: “The Future of High-Performance Computing” on 9 July 2021. Closing remarks will be delivered by EU Ambassador to ASEAN, Igor Driesmans and Satvinder Singh, Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Economic Community.
