The 16th EUREN online meeting held on 21 June inaugurated a new series of events of the network initiated in 2016 as a new platform for interaction between EU and Russian foreign policy experts and think tanks.

Markus Ederer, the European Union Ambassador to the Russian Federation, opened the meeting titled “EU-Russia relations in 2021: Are there ways of perpetual crisis?” praising the role of EUREN: “Since 2016 the EUREN expert network has been giving an important contribution to the refection on EU-Russia relations, with more than 15 encounters, two large reports and numerous articles, analytics and other contributions.” Ambassador Ederer added: “I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude for the support to the network to our colleagues and friends of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC). It is important to maintain constructive avenues of dialogue despite the current challenging context in EU-Russia relations.”

The event started with a reflection on recent developments in the EU-Russia relationship. The second part focused on the steps necessary to further develop the network itself: What role could EUREN play in the current political circumstances? Which formats are best suited to facilitate collaboration within EUREN? Which topics should future EUREN conferences focus on?

EUREN was initiated by the Delegation of the European Union to the Russian Federation and the Russian International Affairs Council. It brings together 40 prominent foreign policy experts and think tanks from Russia and EU member states. They exchange views on relevant issues and formulate policy recommendations to be presented to decision-makers of both the EU and Russia.
