Today we welcome the entry into force of the new Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters negotiated by all thirty-three countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. At a time when multilateralism is subject to criticism and where the ghosts of nationalism raise their heads again, it is a hopeful sign that thirty-three countries are federating in the name of protecting the environment and its defenders.


Hoy saludamos la entrada en vigor del nuevo Acuerdo Regional sobre el Acceso a la Información, la Participación Pública y el Acceso a la Justicia en Asuntos Ambientales negociado por todos los treinta y tres países de América Latina y del Caribe. En un momento donde el multilateralismo está sujeto a críticas y donde vuelven a levantar las cabezas los fantasmas del nacionalismo es una señal esperanzadora que treinta y tres países se federen en nombre de la protección del medio ambiente y de sus defensores.

Now we face COVID -19, a worldwide health pandemic linked to the health of our ecosystem.

Este 22 de abril, Día de la Tierra, entra en vigor el Acuerdo Regional sobre el Acceso a la Información, la Participación Pública y el Acceso a la Justicia en Asuntos Ambientales en América Latina y el Caribe, más conocido como Acuerdo de Escazú, adoptado en Costa Rica, el 4 de marzo de 2018.

Es el primer tratado ambiental de América Latina y el Caribe, que busca asegurar el derecho de las generaciones presentes y futuras a vivir en un medio ambiente sano.

18/04/2021 – HR/VP Blog – The Covid-19 crisis continues to change the global balance of power. The new IMF economic forecast shows that the recovery is underway even if uncertainties remain. However, the gap between emerging and developing countries and the advanced economies plus China is worrying. The EU is also at serious risk of falling behind the US and China if it does not develop active policies to prevent this.

The European Union congratulates the Ecuadorian people who went to the polls on Sunday for the second round of the presidential elections. The electoral process was peaceful and saw a high turnout reflecting the strong commitment of Ecuadorian people to democracy. Preliminary results show a comfortable victory of Guillermo Lasso. The EU looks forward to working with the new elected President.
