The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, Josep Borrell, spoke on the phone with the Tunisian Prime Minister, Elyes Fakhfakh, on Tuesday 7 April.

The High Representative congratulated the Prime Minister on his appointment and reiterated the European Union’s solidarity with Tunisia and the Tunisian people at this difficult time, as attested by the accelerated disbursement of support worth around €250 million to the Tunisian budget for 2020. The decision, taken in agreement with Tunisia, is intended to support Tunisia’s efforts in dealing with the coronavirus epidemic.

Mr Borrell and Mr Fakhfakh both highlighted the importance of international cooperation to meet the challenges arising from the coronavirus. In this regard, the High Representative informed the Prime Minister of the meeting of the European Ministers for Development which would be held on Wednesday 8 April, in order to set out a common European approach to support partner countries in the fight against the coronavirus.
