Brussels

A Senior Officials' Meeting between the European Union and Singapore took place in Brussels on 16 October 2019.

The meeting underlined the substantive nature of EU-Singapore relations, reflected in the approval by the European Parliament in 2019 of the EU-Singapore Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, the Free Trade Agreement, and the Investment Protection Agreement.  Under the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, the EU and Singapore will deepen their bilateral relations and strengthen their sectorial cooperation to tackle global challenges. The Partnership and Cooperation Agreement will enter into force once it has been ratified by all EU Member States.

The discussions encompassed several domains of common interest and focussed on broadening cooperation notably as regards the circular economy, digital economy, cyber security, trade and investment. The regional dimension featured high on the agenda in the context of Singapore's role as ASEAN coordinator for relations with the EU until August 2021.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific in the European External Action Service, and Mr Ng Teck Hean, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.
