The decision by the Sheki Appeal Court of Azerbaijan to conditionally release opposition politician Ilgar Mammadov after over five years in prison is a welcome step.

The European Union is deeply concerned about the continued imprisonment of Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov in the Russian Federation. No one should be imprisoned for their political beliefs.

De nationalité bulgare, Mme Kuneva prendra ses fonctions à compter du 1er septembre 2018, après la fin du mandat de l'Ambassadeur Vilen.

Last 19th July, 2018 HR/VP Federica Mogherini announced the nomination of Ms Meglena Kuneva as new Head of the EU Delegation to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Bulgarian national, Ms Kuneva will assume her duties from September 1st, 2018, after the termination of Ambassador Vilen's mandate.

Shortly after the illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula by the Russian Federation in 2014, film director Oleg Sentsov was arrested in Crimea. His health is at risk of rapid deterioration. He should be immediately and unconditionally released on humanitarian grounds.
