High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell had a video call with Montenegro’s Speaker of Parliament Aleksa Bečić, Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić, Deputy Prime Minister Dritan Abazović and Minister of Foreign Affairs Đorđe Radulović on Wednesday, 9 December 2020.
High Representative/Vice-President Borrell congratulated the political leaders on their appointments and looked forward to the new parliament and government continuing Montenegro's steady path towards the European Union. In this regard, he welcomed the new leadership’s commitment to the EU reform agenda and underlined that the months ahead should be used to advance on political reforms, particularly in the area of rule of law.
High Representative Borrell appreciated Montenegro’s strong record of full alignment with EU foreign and security policy positions and expressed gratitude for Montenegro’s contributions to the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy missions and operations.
The High Representative recalled the EU’s commitment to supporting Montenegro in its response to the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences. To this end, the European Commission recently announced a substantial Economic and Investment Plan to support the Western Balkans' long-term recovery and bring the region closer to the EU.
