On the 20th of May, our Delegation celebrated the Erasmus Day, Europe Day - event together with the Erasmus + Programme, City of Strasbourg, Youth Mobility Ambassadors and the Pulse of Europe representatives. It was an event that combined two important milestones that symbolize our common achievements during the last decades: The 60th Anniversary of the Rome Treaties and the 30th Anniversary of the Erasmus + Programme.

The event took place in three different spots around the city: Place Gutenberg, Place Dauphine and Parc de l’Orangerie, in which our EUDEL - team distributed flyers, balloons and ice cream. The event was complemented by face painting for children in Parc de l’Orangerie, a huge fresco to where everyone could post, write and express their thoughts about Europe and the Erasmus + Programme, and the singing of the European Anthem Ode to Joy by our team joined by people passing by in Place Gutenberg.

In the evening event, with the presence of more than 150 Erasmus students, the Deputy Head of our EU Delegation José Mendes Bota gave a speech in which he emphasized the importance of the youth mobility and the European Union citizenship. He talked about the importance of the Erasmus + programme and how the the level of mobility has risen from a yearly budget of 11,2 million euros thirty years ago to a budget of 2 billion euros a year. Mendes Bota ended his speech by quoting his own words 20 years ago:

"When we are born we come free, pure and without borders. Building a united Europe is like being born again. That's the way I want to go!"

In addition to the speeches by Deputy HoD Mendes Bota, Nawel Rafik-Elmrini, Deputy Mayor of the City of Strasbourg, and David Rodriguez Sanchez, President of the “Erasmus Student Network” (ESN)-Strasbourg NGO, we also saw both the display of EU-themed videos and the presentation of the completed fresco. During the evening, we also had an opportunity to enjoy musical, artistic and culinary activities from all over the world.

On the 25th of March this year, the European Union travelled back in time to the year 1957 and renewed its vows to the Rome Treaties, in which the foundations were laid for the mobile and united Europe we know today. These values have been further strengthened by the establishment of the Erasmus Programme in 1987 through which over three million people have travelled abroad to study or to work.
