Delegation of the European Union to the Council of Europe

Europe Day Reception 2017

11/05/2017 - 11:44

On the occasion of the Europe Day 9 May 2017 we, the European Union Delegation to the Council of Europe, organised the annual high-level reception at our Delegation. Thank to all of our guests for coming and happy Europe Day 2017!

Europe Day 2017 was celebrated in Strasbourg in sunny but chill spring weather. On the occasion of the Europe Day 2017 we, the European Union Delegation to the Council of Europe, organised the annual high-level reception at our Delegation in the presence of  the Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland, the Debuty Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, President of the European Court of Human Rights Guido Raimondi and President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio. After the exciting French presidential election a timing to celebrate the European Union could've not been more suitable. With delicious food, wine tasting, Europe-themed decorations, a jazz band and especially our beautiful garden with over 200 guests enjoying the ceremonial atmosphere made our reception very successful.

Ambassador Jari Vilen in his speech warmly welcomed the guests for the reception and emphasized how this year's Europe Day celebrations are particularly remarkable due to challenges in the EU and around us. This year is the year of reflection and reorientation of the EU. Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland gave a speech in which he looked back at the Schuman declaration and pointed out the importance of the EU and the Council of Europe working hand in hand. He also strongly defended the EU's internal market, the free moment of people and the Eurozone.

As many locals and city visitors know, Strasbourg is known as the bike capital of France. Taking into account that sometimes the weather is rainy, we decided to combine these two elements and gave bike seats covers with EU60 –logo as annual gifts to our guests. The EU will now be even more visible on the streets of Strasbourg with the flow of hundreds of bicycles decorated with our seat covers. If you spot the #EU60 –logo and birds in different shades of blue on a white background, you know what it stands for.

The EUDEL continues celebrating the '60th Anniversary of the Rome treaties' celebrations and on 20 May we will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus programme in Strasbourg together with hundreds of Erasmus students.
