Statement by the Spokesperson on the situation in Nicaragua

22.04.2018
Text

Several deaths, many injuries and extensive damage to property have been reported amid extensive demonstrations and counter-mobilisations in various areas of Nicaragua since reforms to the social security system were announced a few days ago.

The European Union expresses its condolences to the families of the victims, and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. Violence is unacceptable; differences can only be resolved through inclusive dialogue. Protests need to be conducted peacefully, and public security forces must act with maximum restraint.

Respect for freedom of expression and of assembly in a peaceful manner, according to national and international law, is essential to democratic society. Furthermore, the free and independent media are guaranteed by the Nicaraguan Constitution.

The EU is ready to support broad and inclusive dialogue between all sectors of society and the Government, and strengthening the rule of law in Nicaragua.
