A meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors (BoG) was held on 17/18 November 2016. The Director General, Yukiya Amano, dedicated a large part of his introductory statement to technical cooperation. In the proposed programme for 2017 on technical cooperation, the major fields of activity will be  safety and security, health and nutrition, and food and agriculture. He mentioned some successful different TC projects (in Asia and the Pacific, Peru, Benin) and said that he would continue to encourage the development of more focused TC projects that would help countries to achieve the SDGs.

 

In this respect, he asked attention for the first ever "International Conference on the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme" that would take place 30 May 2017. He also mentioned the preparations for the "International Conference on Nuclear Security" (5 – 9 December) and he said that the Conference could maintain the political momentum for nuclear security in the coming years and could provide a solid base for the IAEA Nuclear Security Plan 2018 - 2021.

 

Six EU statements were delivered six statements on the different agenda items including on the Medium Term Strategy 2018 – 2023, the Application of Safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic, and the Verification and Monitoring in the Islamic Republic of Iran in light of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015).

 

It was the last regular session of the BoG in 2016, the next meeting will take place from 6 to 10 March 2017.
