CONNECTING COLOMBIA TO THE ENERGY OF TOMORROW
Colombia and the European Union are working together to accelerate the transition to green energy. We are investing in sustainable energy programmes that create a positive impact on people’s lives, today and tomorrow. By using the power of wind, sun and water, we give power to the people of Colombia.
Meet Omar
Hi, I'm Omar, and I love riding my bike and being in touch with nature. I always bring my camera with me to save those moments and share my view on Colombia with other people.
I truly love the idea of using tools that don’t pollute and are in favor of the environment and the planet.
Connecting with nature is something I truly love, and it’s reassuring to know that the energy charging my bike and camera comes from natural resources. Through my work, I aim to create a positive impact, and using sustainable energy plays a big part in making that happen.
Meet Ricardo
Hello, I’m Ricardo, and I am the creator and builder of Latido SoundSystem. My passion lies in bringing people together through music. Electricity is essential for our project.
The transition to green energy aligns perfectly with our values. We frequently address ecological issues in our work.
Music is about frequencies and energy, and electricity powers everything we do, from sound systems to lighting. So, knowing that our own energy is sustainable, makes our projects more complete. This will also help us to spread the right energy among people in Colombia and create a more complete experience at our events.

ENERGY PROGRAMMES IN COLOMBIA
Global Green Bond Initiative
Global Gateway flagship initiative
The Global Green Bond Initiative is helping Colombia unlock funding for sustainable projects that benefit local communities. With support from the European Union, the initiative boosts the green bond market, financing renewable energy, climate resilience, and environmental conservation. This effort helps Colombia in meeting its climate goals while creating jobs, strengthening infrastructure, and enhancing resilience to climate change, especially in under-served areas.
Urban climate resilience in Colombia
Global Gateway flagship initiative
This initiative, supported by the European Union, aims at increasing the resilience of communities against the consequences of the climate crisis through sustainable city planning, including e.g. coastal protection against landslides, protection of critical infrastructure (water, electricity), infiltration areas, rainwater management systems, early warning systems.
Enel Colombia – Promoting Renewable Energy and Power Grid Improvements
Global Gateway Initiative
The European Investment Bank (EIB), with technical support from the European Commission, has recently granted Enel Colombia a loan equivalent to €280 million to boost solar energy and improve the electricity network in Bogotá.
The funding will primarily support the construction of Guayepo I and II, two solar photovoltaic plants with a combined installed capacity of 486 MW, located in the Atlántico department. These will form the largest solar park in Colombia and one of the largest in South America.
The loan will also finance the upgrade and expansion of Enel Colombia’s power grid, which serves over 3.7 million customers in Bogotá, enabling new connections and supporting electric mobility.
SP Nare – harnessing Colombia’s hydro potential
Global Gateway initiative
The SP Nare project is a run-of-the-river hydropower plant in Antioquia, Colombia. It is designed to generate renewable electricity while protecting the surrounding environment. The project will produce around 132 GWh of energy per year and is expected to avoid approximately 30,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. With support from the European Union, SP Nare includes advanced technologies to improve grid reliability and energy efficiency. It also contributes to Colombia’s renewable energy goals by helping diversify the energy mix, strengthening local infrastructure, and supporting community development through environmental and social standards.
ERCO – powering communities with solar energy
Global Gateway initiative
The ERCO Solar Portfolio is a major solar energy project in Colombia, supported by the European Union. The portfolio will include several solar power sites, starting with a plant in Cesar and followed by others in the Meta region. Together, these sites will produce enough clean electricity each year to power thousands of homes, while helping to avoid nearly 38,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. The project supports Colombia’s move away from fossil fuels by increasing access to renewable energy across the country. It also creates jobs in rural areas, contributes to local development, and follows strong environmental and social standards to ensure long-term positive impact.
DESIREE – clean energy for homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals
Global Gateway initiative
With European Union support, DESIREE aims to attract private investment and deliver reliable, affordable energy to communities—especially in rural areas. Its two main goals are to improve energy efficiency for households and businesses, and to electrify essential services such as schools and hospitals. By promoting smart, sustainable solutions, the initiative helps reduce emissions and enhance quality of life. With a strong focus on innovation, DESIREE also fosters new business models that can be scaled and replicated across the region.
Sustainable power and resilience for Colombia’s energy communities
Global Gateway initiative
This project supports Colombia’s transition to renewable energy through the National Energy Communities Model. It will add 105 MW of renewable energy capacity, benefiting over 45,000 people, particularly in communities adopting clean energy for the first time. With European Union backing, the initiative aims to enhance energy reliability, empower local communities, and stimulate economic growth. It is expected to create over 10,000 green jobs, half of which will be for women, while contributing to Colombia’s climate goals of reducing emissions by 51% by 2030.
