More than 30 years ago, Mongolia set out on the path of democratic transformation and significant economic growth tripling its GDP thanks to the discovery and development of its vast mineral reserves. Nevertheless, the country continues to face development challenges, such as lack of economic diversification, unemployment and 28% of the population still lives in poverty.

Apart from its mineral wealth, the agricultural and livestock resources promise long-term development prospects.

To foster economic diversification and employment creation outside the mining sector, the EU partnered with FAO to strengthen the conditions and capacity for the creation of employment in the livestock and vegetable sector value chains in Mongolia. The activities of the project supported employment and income opportunities in value chains for meat and meat products, milk and dairy products and vegetables. Between 2016 and 2020, the project reached more than 12 000 herders and vegetable producers and created over 2 200 jobs.
