Statements on behalf of the EU

Madam Chair,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union. The following countries align themselves with this statement: Turkey§, the Republic of North Macedonia*, Montenegro*, Iceland+, Serbia*, Albania*, Bosnia and Herzegovina*, Liechtenstein+, Norway+, Armenia, Ukraine, Georgia and San Marino.

Madam Chair,

It is with deepest sadness that the European Union received the tragic news of the passing away of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Ambassador Yukiya Amano. Our deepest condolences go to Director General Amano’s relatives and to the IAEA staff.

This is a great loss for the Agency and for the international community. Throughout his tenure as Director General Ambassador Amano served the IAEA as well as its Member States with unwavering determination and commitment. He was a man of remarkable dedication and professionalism, at the service of the international community in the most impartial way. Under his leadership the Agency delivered concrete results to achieve the objectives of “Atoms for Peace and Development” as well as the Sustainable Development Goals.

DG Amano's will leave behind a strong legacy in all fields covered by the IAEA's mandate, be it non-proliferation, nuclear energy, nuclear safety, nuclear security or technical cooperation. The European Union also highly values the very important role played by Director General Amano with regard to the crucial contribution of the IAEA to the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Director General Amano had a clear vision of the IAEA role, a sharp understanding of the political sensitivities, and a strong determination to deliver what was expected from the IAEA.

We, Permanent Representatives and our staff will miss a great interlocutor, open, reliable, and knowledgeable. A man of great culture and always at the service of the international community. Mr. Amano had a long and distinguished diplomatic career in the service of nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation before assuming his post as DG of the IAEA. Those who worked closely with him found him to be a warm and decent man, with an impressive sense of humour, and a strong desire to deliver for the Agency and for Member States.

The European Union will stand by the IAEA and its staff in the difficult weeks to come.

            Thank you, Madam Chair.
