The Ambassador of the European Union to China, Hans-Dietmar Schweisgut, hosted on Friday 17th of November the closing event of the first study tour of European young farmers to China. The event was attended by the Director-General of European Commission DG Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Jerzy Plewa and the Vice Minister of Agriculture of the PRC, Mr Bei Meijia. This first batch of young farmers had the opportunity to spend two weeks visiting innovative farms, cooperatives, universities, technological parks and agri-businesses in Beijing, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces and meeting and exchanging with Chinese young farmers about challenges and opportunities of the agriculture of tomorrow.
The joint programme on Capacity Building for Young Professional Farmers and Agricultural Professionals was launched last April by EU Commissioner Phil Hogan and Chinese Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu with the objective of reinforcing cooperation and mutual understanding among new generations who are playing a key role in maintaining the vitality of rural areas and promoting a more sustainable, competitive and modem agriculture.
