Dear friends of the EU and China,
2016 was a year that saw both the European Union and China make great strides in many areas of our relations, particularly on climate change, with the ratification of the Paris Agreement, and the global economy, through the G20 hosted by China.
For 2017, we look forward to more cooperation on many fronts. We will be celebrating the EU-China Blue Year, aimed at promoting innovation and sustainable development of maritime economies; we will also be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the founding treaty of the European Union; in addition, 2017 will be the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus student exchange programme, an important contributor to closer people-to-people contacts between European and Chinese students.
So it is with much optimism for our ever-closer relations that I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2017 and Year of the Rooster.
Hans Dietmar Schweisgut
Ambassador of the European Union to China
