World Earth Day Celebration | Cheers to the Earth with Reusable Cups

To mark the 56th World Earth Day, the EU funded Project EU-China Circular Economy Action Project hosted "Plastic Reduction: We’re Cup-letely Ready!" at Beijing's SOLANA Mall from April 19-29. The event encouraged visitors to reduce the usage of single-use plastics and embrace reusable alternatives, promoting sustainable consumption habits. Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic relations, the event is also a tribute to the cooperation in the field of circular economy. Fighting climate change and preserving the environment are a unique pillar of bilateral relations. Green is the distinctive color of EU-China cooperation.

On Earth Day (April 22), the EU Delegation to China staff participated in the event and demonstrated practical uses of reusable cups, raising awareness about the vital role of the circular economy in combating plastic pollution, and encouraging sustainable practices in daily life.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic toast using reusable cups - a celebration both to the World Earth Day and to the enduring EU-China collaboration in circular economy.

With 400 million tons of plastic waste generated annually worldwide - nearly half being single-use items - plastic pollution represents a pressing global crisis. In 2018, EU and China signed the Memorandum of Understanding of Circular Economy. In 2024, The EU-China Roadmap on Circular Economy, established under the Memorandum, was launched, marking plastics as one of the priority sectors for both sides.
