Speech by EU Ambassador Jorge Toledo at commemorative event "Peace. Security. Future"
Ukraine is an independent country and its territorial integrity must be preserved. Any peace deal must be just and lasting. Otherwise, it will only lead to more war. We have no doubt that Russia will simply rearm and strike again. Therefore, any peace talks must include Ukraine and Europe.
The European Union’s priority now is to strengthen Ukraine. The 16th sanction package on Russia is about to be approved by the EU Foreign Ministers today. The EU and its Members States are the largest overall donor in support to Ukraine with EUR 135 billion. This includes EUR 50 billion in military support. Moreover, the EU has also trained more than 73.000 Ukrainian troops. The EU will now rapidly step up its support to Ukraine and its own defence readiness. On 14 December 2023, the EU has opened accession negotiations for Ukraine to become an EU Member State.
We will stand by Ukraine as long as Ukraine needs and with whatever it takes.
