In an important step in the quest for justice and accountability in Darfur, Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman alias Ali Kushayb, was transferred today to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Ali Kushayb was indicted by the ICC in April 2007 for numerous counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur between 2003 and 2004.
Bringing about transitional justice and accountability for the past atrocities remains one of the key tasks of the transitional authorities in Sudan, who have expressed readiness to cooperate with the ICC.
The EU is firmly committed to preventing crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide, and to avoiding impunity for the perpetrators of such crimes. We reaffirm and will continue our strong support to the ICC and its work.
