On 29th November 2019, the European Union (EU) Representative to COMESA, Ambassador Jacek Jankowski and the COMESA Secretary-General Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe officially signed a Contribution Agreement for the Regional Enterprise Competitiveness and Access to Markets Programme (RECAMP), in the margins of the 40th Council of Ministers Meeting in Lusaka. Speaking at the signing ceremony Ambassador Jankowski, highlighted that the European Union is committed to its long standing partnership with COMESA and has been consistently supporting efforts towards regional economic integration. Ambassador Jankowski said that the RECAMP programme is expected to help attract investments in value chains that are environmentally sound, socially inclusive and economically viable.
In her remarks, the Secretary General of COMESA, Ms. Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe said that the programme will enhance the capacities and skills of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to make them capable players in the value-chain development. A significant number of MSMEs, especially women and youth owned enterprises, are vulnerable when it comes to participating in value-chains networks at the national, regional and global level because of their competitiveness.
The programme is funded by the European Union, under 11th European Development Fund, and will be implemented by COMESA and its Member States, COMESA specialised institutions including the COMESA Business Council, the Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa, the COMESA Regional Investment Authority, the African Leather and Leather Products Institution and the Federation of National Association of Women in Business.
