Statement by the Spokesperson on the presidential elections in Guinea-Bissau

27.11.2019
Brussels

On 24 November Presidential elections took place in Guinea-Bissau which should bring an end to the political and institutional crisis in the country since 2015. International observers and national civil society monitors confirmed the peaceful, orderly and transparent conduct of the elections. The people of Guinea Bissau have once again shown their strong commitment to electoral democracy by turning out in high numbers to exercise their democratic rights.

The electoral authorities of Guinea-Bissau and the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ECOMIB) in a joint effort with national forces contributed greatly to this result.

It is important that all actors respect the next steps in the electoral process and the agreed Code of Conduct. Any possible complaints should be resolved by legal means.

The European Union will continue to follow closely the situation in Guinea-Bissau and work with regional and international partners to ensure the consolidation of democracy in the country.
