V International Festival "Discover your Europe at the Hermitage"

V International Festival "Discover your Europe at the Hermitage" took place on 21 September 2019 in the General Staff Building of the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia. The festival is timed to the European Day of Languages that is celebrated on 26 September. The theme of the festival in 2019 – theatre. This year the festival coincided with the International Peace Day (UN).

20 EU member-states participated in the Fair of European cultures offering to the guests creative master classes, quizzes, films, language classes, art exhibitions, theatrical games, and music and dance performances.

Smurfetta became an active participant in the European fair. She had an important mission to attract the attention of guests to the global problem of sea pollution. Children played a floor game "The sea is rising" with the aim to save the Smurf village threatened by rising sea levels. Alongside the game, the moderator involved all players in a quiz on responsible environmental behaviour.

The EU Ambassador to Russia Markus Ederer took part in the anniversary festival. Together with the Deputy Director General of the State Hermitage Museum Alexander Vladimirovich Prokhorenko, Ambassador Ederer put his wish in the “Time Capsule”, walked around the Fair of European cultures, and also checked how well the visitors knew Europe by conducting an EU Quiz at the Delegation stand.

“Communication between people and getting to know the cultures of other nations help to overcome differences and strengthen peace. That is why our festival is the best way to celebrate International Peace Day, which is celebrated annually on September 21”, - Ambassador Ederer said before the evening concert.

Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, Director General of the State Hermitage Museum, also delivered a welcoming speech to the guests.

The big concert programme that wrapped up the festival was prepared by the European Union National Institues for Culture (EUNIC), the EU Consulates General in St. Petersburg and the Volunteer Sector of the State Hermitage Museum.

The EU Delegation to Russia is grateful to the management of the State Hermitage Museum and the Volunteer Sector of the State Hermitage Museum, Consulates General and cultural centers of the EU member-states in St. Petersburg for their cooperation and support in organizing and conducting the festival.
