Text

Just over ten years ago, on 23rd October 2008, Li Keqiang, then Vice-Premier of China, and José Manuel Barroso, then President of the European Commission, officially opened the China-EU School of Law (CESL) at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in Beijing. Since its establishment, CESL has dedicated itself to educating Chinese and international legal talents with expertise both in Chinese and European law; to providing professional training for judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and public servants; and to promoting research and consultancy in the legal field. Furthermore, the school has become a platform for legal education, research, academic exchange and cooperation between China and the EU.

Some notable figures include:

  • 700 graduates of the master programmes, all of whom now working in elevated legal positions in China and Europe,
  • Over 9,000 legal professionals trained,
  • 150 scholars involved in 35 research projects,
  • Over 50 workshops and conferences organized.

At the 10th anniversary celebrations today at the China University of Political Science and Law, Ambassador of the European Union to China Mr. Nicolas Chapuis said: "Since its establishment 10 years ago, CESL has proven to be a center of excellence in legal education. It also has created a unique platform for exchange between Chinese and European students, scholars and legal practitioners, promoting and fostering mutual understanding and learning. Those exchanges can contribute considerably to more and better cooperation in an ever more connected world."

16 Partner Universities[1] from China and Europe have successfully worked together in the past 10 years under the CESL umbrella. The 10-year celebration offers opportunities to reflect on the status of academic cooperation in the legal field and its role in bilateral relations. Along with EU Ambassador Chapuis, CUPL President Prof. Huang Jin, former Minister of Justice Mr. Zhang Fusen, as well as alumni were there to share their insights and experiences with current students and members of the CESL network.
