The EU deployed an Election Follow-up Mission (EFM) to Malawi to assess the current electoral reform process and the extent to which previous EU election-related concerns and recommendations have been addressed in recent years.

Text

The Mission’s objective was to assess the current electoral reform process and the extent to which previous EU Election Observation Missions (EU EOM) recommendations may have been addressed. The Mission found that Electoral reforms remain much needed to avoid the many challenges that were seen in 2014. Key priorities centre on introducing greater transparency to the election process and strengthening the institutions involved.

The EU EFM was led by Ms. Birgitte Markussen, Director for Africa at the European External Action Service, who was in the country from 11-14 September 2017. During this period, she met a wide range of Malawian and international stakeholders, and held a roundtable and a press conference.
