On 18th May, a Model EU-China Summit, including mock press conference, was held at the Delegation of the European Union to China in Beijing. Nearly 60 students from Tsinghua University participated in the event, playing roles as political leaders, diplomats and journalists from both the EU and China. This event was part of the EU Delegation’s series of open day activities in China.
At the Model Summit, student diplomats debated such topics as peace and security, trade and economy, as well as environmental issues. A joint communique was issued by students at the end of their discussion. Then followed a mock press conference, with intense questioning from students posing as journalists. Students represented media organisations and press agencies such as Xinhua News Agency, CCTV/CGTN, China Daily, Global Times from China, and Reuters, AFP, DPA, BBC and Politico Europe from Europe. They asked student diplomats questions on EU integration, EU-China political and economic relations and people-to-people exchanges. Issues such as terrorism, the refugee crisis, North Korea, and the South China Sea were also covered. At the end of the event, Minister Counsellor Mr. Asad Beg, Head of Political, Press and Information Section and Mr. William Fingleton, Head of the Press and Information sector also answered questions from the students.
Six students were awarded Outstanding Diplomat and Outstanding Journalist Awards by the EU Delegation. Students said that the EU Delegation hosting the event at their real press conference room makes this event more exciting and realistic, and participating in the activity helped enhance their knowledge of the EU and EU-China relations.
