i. Message from the Ambassador
Welcome to the website of the Delegation of the European Union to China.
This website is a starting point for your journey in learning about the EU and the EU-China relations.
The history of EU-China relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in May 1975 shows manifest deliverables. The China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai and the EU-China Law School in Beijing are flagships of higher education in global norms; the cooperation on intellectual property protection has delivered benefits to businesses facing rights infringement; the present projects on Climate Change, Environment, Biodiversity and Energy show joint leadership in these existential issues. Science and technology cooperation has reached unprecedented levels. Trade and investment flows have brought productivity gains, economies of scale, and impressive growth for our businesses on both sides.
In March 2019, the EU set an ambitious agenda of partnership with China, while seeking to minimize the negative impact of systemic differences and aiming at new agreements in multiple areas, including where we face competition. On sensitive issues, we conduct different forms of dialogues, keeping channels of communication open.
EU-China relations are an essential component of the rules-based international order. The EU will continue to engage in building trust and fostering meaningful convergence in multiple fields with China, as well as in promoting people-to-people relationships, without which EU-China cooperation would not be sustainable.
Our team of European diplomats and experts at the EU Delegation to China is engaged in constant negotiations, consultations and outreach activities across China. We represent all European institutions and agencies under the authority of the European Council and the European Commission, and the supervision of the European Parliament. As part of the European External Action Service, our mission is to further European values and interests in the framework of our China strategic partnership with the support of our 27 Member States.
Collectively, we hoist the European flag, whose circle of twelve golden stars is the symbol of our ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony. We intend to spare no effort in order to sustain a stable, rules-based, prosperous and peaceful world order, embodied by the United Nations Charter (link is external) and grounded on universal human rights norms and obligations (link is external). Mutual trust, openness, transparency and reciprocity are the building blocks of a mature relationship between the European Union and China.
If you wish to obtain updated information on our activities in China, I invite you to visit our website frequently, as well as to follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Weibo. If you have comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your feedback will be most welcome.
