European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, visits Chile to strengthen cooperation with the country on energy matters

On July 1st and 2nd, the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, will visit Chile. The objective of the visit is to exchange perspectives on mutual interests and reinforce the successful collaboration between the European Union (EU) and Chile in energy matters.

The visit will focus on four key areas, including the ratification process of the EU-Chile Advanced Framework Agreement, Chile's progress in promoting the green hydrogen industry, challenges and opportunities for Chilean and European renewable energy companies, and strategic collaboration on critical raw materials.

Commissioner Simson's visit marks an important milestone in energy cooperation between Chile and the EU, especially following the recent signing of the new EU-Chile Advanced Framework Agreement, which will further deepen bilateral relations in this field. Likewise, the visit takes place in the context of the Global Gateway strategy of the European Union, which seeks to promote public and private investment in infrastructure, green energy, education and research for sustainable development.

The Commissioner will meet with high-level Chilean authorities, including the Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren; and the Executive Vice President of CORFO, José Miguel Benavente.

Commissioner Simson will also take the opportunity of her visit to discuss with public and private actors the measures taken by the EU and Chile to ensure a just transition to renewable energy.

They will also review progress on the Global Gateway Investment Agenda, with a particular emphasis on the Team Europe Initiative for Renewable Hydrogen Development in Chile, which seeks to boost the production and use of green hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source, thus contributing to the decarbonisation of the economies on both sides.

Finally, during her visit, the Commissioner will visit innovative projects in renewable energies and energy efficiency in Chile, both achieved through EU cooperation.
