Ambassador Bader visits Bor, Panyagor to assess flood situation

The European Union Ambassador to South Sudan on Tuesday visited Bor and Panyagor in Jonglei State, South Sudan.  Ambassador Christian Bader was part of a high-level delegation led by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator Alain Noudéhou that visited the troubled State to assess the situation created by the exceptional floods there and the needs of the local population who have been left vulnerable.

The delegation comprised representatives from World Food Programme, United Kingdom, the Netherlands as well as National Ministers Peter Manawa Gatkuoth of Water and Irrigation, Peter Mayen Majongdit of Humanitarian Affairs and Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Deng Dau Deng.

They met and discussed with partners and community leaders ways of addressing the challenges faced by more than 400,000 people displaced by the floods in the area.

“We need to make sure that this situation (flooding) which is likely to happen again with the next rainy season is properly addressed and dams and dykes repaired as soon as possible,” Ambassador Bader said.

According to UN agencies, the floods have affected at least 800,000 people in South Sudan since July and 37 of the country’s 78 counties are impacted.
