The Secretary General praised the state of bilateral relations between the EU and the UAE and discussed the next steps in the implementation of the Cooperation Arrangement signed between the European External Action Service and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Against the backdrop of prevailing tensions in the region, the two sides shared their mutual interest in defusing tensions and encouraging de-escalation. Speaking on the EU's position, Mrs Schmid said 'In a context marked by rising tensions, it is essential to show restraint and avoid any further escalation. The risk of miscalculation remains high, especially in the absence of dialogue. Listening to the concerns of all the stakeholders involved and finding ways to de-escalate are in the interest of everyone".
The Secretary General expressed appreciation for the UAE's constructive stance and encouraged the authorities to engage further with all influential actors to reduce tensions.
In this context, Mrs Schmid recalled the EU’s commitment to the preservation of the nuclear deal with Iran, which continues to be a key pillar of security and stability, both for the Middle East and Europe.
Mrs Schmid also exchanged views with her interlocutors on the different crises in the EU/UAE common broad neighbourhood. She stressed in particular the urgency to move forward in the implementation of the Stockholm Agreement to pave the way for a political solution to the crisis in Yemen; the need to support UN-led process for the resolution of conflicts in Libya and Syria; the importance to make every effort to ensure a peaceful transition to a civilian government in Sudan, condemning the recent acts of violence.
