A peacekeeper from the United Nations Integrated Mission in Mali (Minusma) lost his life and several members of the French and international forces were injured while fighting off a terrorist attack against a camp of the UN and the Barkhane Force in Timbuktu.
This unacceptable act was yet another attempt to prevent the efforts of the people of Mali to live in peace. We extend our condolences to Mali, France and the UN and hope for the swift recovery of those who were injured.
We reiterate our firm support for the UN forces in Mali, the French forces in the Barkhane operation and those of the G5 Sahel countries in their commendable efforts to promote peace and security in Mali and the region.
This attack is directed against all those who are trying to restore stability in Mali. Those responsible for or complicit in this attack should be arrested and tried, and should be subject to the system of sanctions established by UN Security Council Resolution 2374 (2017).
