On 10 July 2017, the EU and Cabo Verde held a Ministerial Meeting in Brussels under the EU-Cape Verde Special Partnership. The meeting reaffirmed the strong relations between Cabo Verde and the European Union as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Special Partnership, and the commitment to continue deepening this relation in the years to come.

The European Union, hosting the meeting in Brussels, was represented on behalf of the High Representative/Vice President by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, M. Sven Mikser, as Estonia is holding the EU Presidency this semester. Cabo Verde was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence M. Luis Filipe Tavares.

The European Union and Cabo Verde welcomed the excellent quality and depth of the Special Partnership, a unique framework for political dialogue and cooperation with an ACP country that is based not only on strong historical and cultural links, but also reconfirmed a continuous partnership based on common values and principles like democracy, good governance, human rights, and international justice.

The meeting confirmed the EU's and Cabo Verde's common interest to strengthen and enhance their successful cooperation in the coming years, focusing in particular on issues like investment, growth, and jobs; migration and mobility, where both sides took stock of the progress made under their Mobility Partnership; or on ocean governance and the blue economy. The EU and Cabo Verde also agreed to pursue joint efforts regarding maritime security, in particular in the fight against drug trafficking, piracy, and against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea, and close cooperation on the security of borders.

The Ministerial Meeting coincides with the visit of Cabo Verde's President Jorge Carlos Fonseca to Brussels where he will meet Presidents Tusk, Juncker and Tajani. The visit of President Fonseca takes place in the context of the 10th anniversary of the EU-Cabo Verde Special Partnership.
