Canada is known for its low unemployment rate and major labour shortages. With over 400,000 work permits issued in 2019, Canada’s first response to this challenge is immigration. CETA can contribute to filling Canada’s skills shortages by offering several alternatives to facilitate labour mobility and skills transfer between the EU and Canada.

Following the success of our CETA webinars on How to Export to Canada And Benefit From CETA and How To Find A Business Partner In Canada, the Delegation of the European Union to Canada organised a webinar on Immigration and Mobility of Professionals on 10 December 2020.

Canada has seen steady GDP growth over the past five years and is expected to be the G7 member with the second highest GDP growth for the 2019-2020 period.

Guest speakers included Ms. Natacha MIGNON, Partner and Immigration Attorney at Immetis Legal Services, who presented:

  • An introduction to the EU-Canada mobility of professionals under CETA and the main advantages CETA introduces for EU companies
     
  • A brief overview of in-demand sectors in Canada, as well as opportunities for EU companies to expand their activities
     
  • Key steps to implement an immigration strategy when opening a branch/subsidiary in Canada or transferring executives
     
  • How to apply for a work permit in Canada, using CETA’s Chapter 10 provisions


The seminar, the third in a series geared towards supporting EU business access to the Canadian market under CETA, was hosted in the context of the CETA Market Access Programme aimed at enhancing free trade between the EU and Canada.
