Ring the Bell for Gender Equality: EU marks International Women's Day in Canada

09/03/2020 - 20:51

TORONTO - European Union Chargé d'affaires, Mr. Brice de Schietere, joined "Ring the Bell for Gender Equality" today at NEO Exchange, in celebration of the International Women's Day 2020. The initiative is part of WE EMPOWER, EU's signature partnership with UN Women and the International Labour Organization.

The €6.5 million three-year joint initiative aims to promote women's economic empowerment and responsible business by bringing together G7 business leaders and stakeholders across industries, in an effort to step up the implementation of the G7 Roadmap for a Gender-Responsive Economic Environment.

"Women have made advances in business, trade and administration in recent times. However, despite all efforts to narrow the gender gap, female professionals are still under-represented in politics and in the economy," said de Schietere. "The European Union and its Member States are at the forefront of efforts to promote human rights for all women and girls. Our collective ambition, as citizens of the world, must be to achieve gender equality in all aspects of life."

A number of activities have been organized in G7 countries, as part of the WE EMPOWER project. Most notably in Canada, WE EMPOWER celebrated Culture Night during the Women Deliver Conference last June. The project also facilitated a number of discussions with high-level stakeholders across the country on the future of work, women in trade, and women entrepreneurship.

WE EMPOWER reinforces the EU's Global Strategy, which sets the EU's foreign and security policy priorities, including efforts to fight gender inequality, promote responsible business and champion women's economic empowerment and participation in peace operations.
