#EUGreenDeal – for our future, for the future of our planet

11.12.2019

‘When climate disasters strike the EU is there to help’ – this is the theme of an EU campaign providing humanitarian aid to victims of natural and man-made disasters brought about by climate change. ‘El Niño brings despair, Andres brings repair’ states one of the captions used in the campaign, as Andres, a dedicated EU humanitarian aid worker, helps to provide immediate food assistance and livelihood opportunities to strengthen the resilience of communities affected by drought in Guatemala. This is just one example. But the EU is not only there to help in the aftermath of climate disasters. By bringing forward the European Green Deal, the EU commits to make Europe carbon neutral by 2050, and protect our natural habitat for years to come.

With the European Green Deal Europe will become the world’s first climate neutral continent boosting the economy, improving people's health and quality of life, caring for nature, and leaving no one behind. This is the greatest challenge and opportunity of our times.

The #EUGreenDeal provides guidelines for making the EU's economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas and making the transition just and inclusive for all.

As the EU High Representative Josep Borrell pointed out when he attended the opening of COP 25, “The EU is taking responsibility to tackle climate change but to have a global impact, we need collective action.”

The European Green Deal provides a roadmap of key actions to boost the efficient use of resources by moving to a clean, circular economy and stop climate change, revert biodiversity loss and cut pollution. It outlines investments needed and financing tools available, and explains how to ensure a just and inclusive transition.

The European Green Deal covers all sectors of the economy, notably transport, energy, agriculture, buildings, and industries such as steel, cement, ICT, textiles and chemicals.

To set into legislation the political ambition of being the world's first climate neutral continent by 2050, the Commission will present the first ‘European Climate Law' within 100 days.
