Enhanced opportunities for security and defence cooperation between Canada and the European Union will be the focus of the 5th European Union Security and Defence Symposium, to be held Wednesday, March 20 at the Rideau Club in Ottawa.

This half-day session will address the emerging defence challenges on both sides of the Atlantic and examine how the EU and Canada can work more closely together.

The Symposium will highlight the EU’s Permanent Structure Cooperation (PESCO) initiative, which has led to better and more effective defence cooperation among EU Member States.

Senior leaders from the European Union Military Staff and the European Defence Agency will be among the featured speakers, along with Canadian experts and decision-makers.

Speakers include: 

  • General Esa Pulkkinen, Director General of the European Union's Military Staff (EUMS)
  • Jorge Domecq, Chief Executive, European Defence Agency
  • Josef Schroefl, Deputy Director for COI Strategy and Defence, The European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats
  • Alexandros Papaioannou, NATO and Multilateral Affairs Section, Political Affairs and Security Policy Division
  • The Hon. Serge Cormier, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence
