This year, the European diplomatic corps will be presenting a 30-block ice sculpture featuring everyday objects symbolic of EU Member States, which will be on display in the ByWard Market (Clarendon Lane) beginning 1 February. On 10 February, the public will be invited to break the ice blocks and retrieve the objects for keepsake.
"This will be a fun-filled activity for families and we are happy to be part of this exciting winter celebration," said Peteris Ustubs, Ambassador of the European Union to Canada. "We are thrilled to partner with Winterlude and contribute to its success for a fourth consecutive year. In 2019, we are also celebrating another extraordinary journey: euro’s milestone 20th anniversary."
“More than ever, this year’s Winterlude highlights our artistic, cultural and culinary diversity. What better way to express this than through art! This ephemeral sculpture symbolizes the ever-evolving mosaic in the world today. Each of these frozen-in-time objects perfectly reflects our cherished cultural diversity that enriches our communities. As we mark the 20th anniversary of the euro, I invite everyone to reflect on the values it represents, like nations working together in harmony for the common good," said the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism.
For two decades, the European Union's single currency has made it easier for Europeans to travel, study, work, and live abroad. The euro has become an integral part of everyday life. Today, the Euro is the currency of 19 EU countries and over 340 million Europeans. It is one of the most important currencies in the world – and a constant reminder of the freedom, convenience and opportunities that the EU makes possible.
