The Delegation of the European Union to Canada offers paid traineeships to young graduates with a university diploma and less than one year of professional experience.

What we offer

Paid traineeships are available in the following sections:

  • Political and Public Affairs section: trainees will be asked to conduct thematic / geographic research and draft reports on political topics to be determined with their supervisor. Trainees will also support the activities of the section and public diplomacy activities of the Delegation. Trainees can be called to provide ad hoc support for all activities of the Delegation.
  • Trade and Economic section: trainees will draft notes and briefings on the topics covered by the section. They will prepare and participate in meetings, including note-taking. Trainees will be asked to conduct research and analysis of specific topic as needed by the section. Trainees can be called to provide ad hoc support for all activities of the Delegation.  

Are you eligible for a remunerated traineeship?

You may apply for the traineeship if:

  • You are a young graduate with a University diploma (at least Bachelor's degree)
  • You have less than 1 year of professional experience
  • You are a national of an EU Member State, pre-accession State or a Canadian national
  • You have no previous professional experience of more than 6 weeks in any of the EU institutions

What are the general rules?

  • Duration: the traineeship can be up to a maximum of six months
  • Monthly grant: selected trainees will receive a monthly grant of 1200€
  • Visa: trainees are responsible for obtaining and covering the cost of necessary visa
  • Travel: trainees have to arrange and finance their travel to the EU Delegation in Ottawa
  • Accommodation: the trainee will have to cover their accommodation costs

Traineeship periods and the corresponding deadlines for applications:

  • Traineeship from September to December

Application period: 1 May to 31 May

  • Traineeship from January to April

Application period: 1 September to 30 September

  • Traineeship from May to July

Application from 1 January to 31 January

Applications received outside these periods will not be considered.


If selected for a paid traineeship, trainees will need to provide the following documents:

  • Diploma
  • Language certificates
  • Extract from the "judicial record"
  • Passport/ID card
  • Insurance certificate (repatriation included)
  • Medical certificate
  • Signed traineeship agreement


You are requested to examine the general eligibility criteria. Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications received is over, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. In case the selected candidate is not able to present all required documents, his/her candidacy will be rejected.
