The Delegation of the European Union to Canada is delighted to partner with Winterlude – one of Canada's most-anticipated winter festivals - for a third consecutive year. This year's 60-block EU ice sculpture is dedicated to Canada and the EU's joint global efforts in the fight against climate change.

"There is no question that climate change is now occurring with visible impacts on our environment. Together, Canada and the European Union are leading global efforts in the fight against climate change," said Peteris Ustubs, Ambassador of the European Union to Canada. "Climate action must outpace climate change. This year will be significant as we are moving ahead with the implementation of the Paris Agreement."

Signed in 2015, the historic Paris Agreement calls for ambitious action to effectively address global warming and its adverse effects. Canada, the European Union and the 28 EU Member States are among the pact's 197 signatory partners. The agreement urges countries to decrease their carbon footprint and gradually move to renewable sources of energy.

"Paris was a defining moment in the global challenge to safeguard the planet for current and future generations," Ambassador Ustubs continued. "We are happy to have the opportunity to raise climate action awareness at Winterlude."

"It is with great excitement that Canada’s Capital Region hosts the 40th edition of Winterlude, a much-loved winter celebration. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of wonderful activities that highlight our country’s nature, climate and culture. Thank you to all the partners who are helping bring this year’s celebrations to life. I invite everyone to join in the excitement,” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

The unveiling of the EU ice scuplture will take place on Saturday, 3 February at 5:30 p.m., at Confederation Park in Ottawa.
