High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini meets with UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay

Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met today in Brussels with UNESCO's newly elected Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, for an exchange of views on priorities for EU-UNESCO cooperation.

In the discussion, High Representative Mogherini reiterated the importance of UNESCO's mandate as a pillar of the multilateral system. The European Union fully supports the new Director-General in her task to reform UNESCO, making it an even stronger and more efficient organisation. UNESCO is and will continue to be an important partner of the European Union, cooperating notably in the implementation of the European Union's strategy for international cultural relations, the celebrations of the European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018 and the protection of cultural heritage in crisis situations. The European Union will also continue its partnership with UNESCO in the fields of education, science and research. Furthermore, the European Union appreciates UNESCO's work in preventing radicalisation, an area where further cooperation could be explored. Federica Mogherini also highlighted the European Union's interest to step up work with UNESCO on women and youth empowerment.

The European Union will continue to work closely together with UNESCO and the wider UN system in strengthening multilateralism and global governance, including on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
