The Honourable Geoff Regan, Speaker of the House of Commons, and His Excellency Peteris Ustubs European Union Ambassador to Canada hosted an awards ceremony on 3 October to honour the three laureates of the 2017 EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship.
This year's winners are Jennifer Ackerman, journalism student from the University of Regina, Megan Devlin, recent University of British Columbia graduate and National Post journalist Marie-Danielle Smith.
The three winners will embark on a week-long study tour of EU institutions in Brussels beginning 9 October. The study tour is part of an initiative by the EU Delegation to Canada and the Canadian Association of Journalists that aims to give young Canadian journalists an opportunity to advance their career goals and create life-long bonds with Europeans.
In his speech, Ambassador Ustubs stressed the importance of free press in protecting and promoting democracy worldwide. “Journalists are not only communicators, not only storytellers but also connectors and bridge builders who facilitate open exchanges and the free flow of ideas, visions and understanding across borders, nations and continents, across Canada and the European Union,” he said.
