Phnom Penh, 10 May 2019 – On the occasion of the Europe Day 9 May 2019, the EU Ambassador, H.E. George Edgar together with the Senior Minister H.E. Ly Thuch, and the Acting Minister of Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce, H.E. Kem Sithan, presented the official European Union GI registration certificate of Skor Thnot Kampong Speu to Mr. Som Saroeun, President of the Kampong Speu Palm Sugar Promotion Association.
"The EU congratulates Cambodia's Kampong Speu palm sugar for its successful registration as an EU Protected Geographical Indication (GI), and is happy to continue to support Cambodia in registering new Protected Geographical Indications. Protected GIs help ensure a fair financial return to producers and protect rural areas, and have tremendous potential as a source of economic development" said Ambassador George Edgar.
Skor Thnot Kampong Speu was successfully registered as an EU Protected Geographical Indication (GI) on 3 April 2019. This means that only palm sugar certified by the Kampong Speu Palm Sugar Promotion Association can be sold under that name in Europe, and should help in marketing Kampong Speu palm sugar as a high quality and high value product. This follows the registration in 2016 of a protected GI for Kampot Pepper.
