All children have the right to receive good quality education. To achieve this requires qualified teachers, strong community involvement, easy access to education and a robust education system.
Toch Sam is 13 years old, studying in grade 6 at Teuk Laak public school. He has three siblings, two brothers and a sister. After his parents died, he and his siblings lived with their grandmother on the streets of Phnom Penh. In the ensuing months, his grandmother enrolled him in a non-formal educational programme in 1st grade and his other siblings in vocational skills training. After two months, he was integrated into 2nd grade in the public school.
Now Toch Sam is in 6th grade at public school and ranks 1st or 2nd in his class. He is also strong in maths.
Thanks to the NGO support programme funded by the EU, he receives a uniform, sandals, school materials and transportation to his public school.
